Gas Safety Week: 13th – 19th September 2021

Being Gas Safe is important all year round. It isn’t always a households top priority, but it should be. Gas Safety Week is coordinated by the Gas Safe Register. It provides a platform for the gas industry to focus all of their communications about gas safety in one week and helps to raise awareness of the importance of gas safety to the individual homeowner. Here at Plumr, we’ve compiled all the information you need to know about being Gas Safe in one place.

How to Find A Gas Safe Registered Engineer?

You can find a Gas Safe engineer by consulting the Gas Safe Register. The Gas Safe Register is the official list of businesses that are legally permitted to carry out gas work. You can find Plumr’s Gas Safety listing on the Gas Safe Register website. When a registered plumbing business employs an engineer(s), they will check they have been issued with a Gas Safe ID card. If they do not already have one, the company should provide the engineer with the relevant training to acquire one. Not all engineers are qualified for all kinds of gas jobs. This makes it essential to check the ID card of your engineer before they begin the work. All of the jobs that that specific engineer is qualified for will be noted on the back of the card.

Checking A Company is Gas Safe Registered

It is a law requirement for engineers to be on the Gas Safe Register. Without being registered it is illegal for an engineer to work on gas appliances. Someone without the right qualifications and who is not registered could cause catastrophic harm. According to the Gas Safety Register, one million gas jobs are completed illegally every year. This makes it highly important to check the ID and qualifications of your chosen engineer. Plumbing work carried on your boiler by an unregistered engineer could result in issues such as carbon monoxide leaks, putting you and your family in danger and causing further repairs. Therefore you must use Gas Safe Registered engineers.

Evaluating a Gas Safe ID Card

As soon as your engineer arrives to carry out your work, you should request their Gas Safe ID card. Once your engineer presents their ID card, you should immediately look for the Gas Safe security hologram. Fake cards cannot replicate this hologram. You should then check that the photograph on the ID card matches the engineer who turned up to the job. Once you have established that the engineer is who they say they are, you should then check the details on the card itself. The main areas to check are the engineer and company name and the jobs that the engineer is qualified to complete. On the opposite side of the ID card, you will find a list of appliances your engineer is qualified to work on. Some engineers are only qualified for specific appliances. Ensure that your engineer has the qualifications to carry out the work you hired them for. If you do not see your appliance listed, do not go forward with the work. Ensure that the card hasn’t expired and that a license number has been embossed on the card. An unsafe engineer can cause serious damage and safety issues in your system.
